Search Engine Optimisation

This month we are going to talk about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), but before we get into it, let’s re-cap what we have learnt over the past 6 months:

  1. Planning – create a job list and prioritise your tasks.
  2. How to choose a webhost that will provide everything you need to build your own website.
  3. The biggest secret to Marketing Online – It’s all about the Content.
  4. How to choose a profitable site concept.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search Engine Optimisation or more commonly known in the computer geek language as SEO, is just a method of writing content so it appeals to search engines. The biggest advantage of SEO is it’s one of the only methods of attracting free traffic to your website. It‘s entirely different to Google Ads. With Google Ads you have to pay per click meaning that each person who clicks on your ad and is directed to your website, you pay a certain fee. SEO is the ultimate way to drive traffic to your website because you will get the best return on your investment (ROI) for your business.

SEO is not all good news. It is hard work and very time consuming. You will find big companies with a large advertising budget may opt to choose Google Ads over SEO. But this is not always the best use of your money because once the person has clicked on that Google Ad you will never get a return on that money again.

Alternatively, you could pay someone to write content for your website, which would cost around $150 per page. Compare this to an average Google Ad that will cost you 25 cents or more per click, it is a sound investment. When you do the math, ($150 divided by 25 cents per visitor) this equates 600 visitors to your website for your $150 investment.

On the other hand, if you used that money to write a good SEO webpage you could possibly get 600 visitors to your webpage per year, every year for life. So can you see the benefit that SEO offers for the long term?

I’m not saying to completely rule out Google Ads as it is a great way to get traffic instantly to your website. What I am saying is that if you do not have a large budget when you are first starting your business venture then you may prefer the SEO option.

Now we have learnt the importance of SEO, what is it exactly and how can you benefit from SEO?

The Six Steps to becoming a successful SEO’er
Last month we talked about choosing a good domain name. When we went through this process we used two free programs, one was ”Good Keywords Tool” and the other was using a “Google ads Keyword Search Tool”. From all these words we worked out the profitability of each keyword. If you missed last month’s newsletter click hereto read it.

The key to growing your website is to write a content-rich webpage based on each of these keywords you found last month. The first step is to incorporate your keyword into your heading and then strategically place the keyword throughout your content.

Let’s have a look at an example so you can understand this concept. The webpage we are going to use for this exercise is our Pyramid Scheme webpage. Click here to visit our Pyramid Scheme webpage. The main keyword for this page is Pyramid Scheme.

To determine the keywords of any webpage that you visit, all you have to do is look at the source. To do this, click on viewlocated on the tool bar up the top left hand side of your page and then scroll down til you find source and click on that. A window will pop up, that has symbols and text in a notepad file. This is what computer geeks call html code, this is the language that webpages are written in to get the results of a website. I know it looks confusing at first but really it is not that bad. What I want you to take notice of is the 7th to the 12th line down. You will see the following text.

7th "title"- Pyramid Scheme vs Network Marketing?
8th - "keywords" content="pyramid scheme, pyramid scam, network marketing,
9th - network marketing pyramid, mlm">
10th - description" content="A pyramid scheme and network marketing share
11th - many similarities so we help to explain the difference. Includes a FREE checklist of
12th - things to look for and education about the network marketing industry.">

Step 1 - Keyword in the heading
If we have a look at the 7th line you will find that we have written the title. Notice how my keyword Pyramid Scheme is written into the title “Pyramid Scheme vs Network Marketing?” . The title will be seen in the search engines. For example, if you typed “Pyramid Scheme vs Network Marketing” into google, you find our website advertised in the top three websites. Go ahead and see if you can find it.

On the 8th line you can see all the keywords that are listed for this page. We have pyramid scheme, pyramid scam, network marketing, network marketing pyramid, mlm. You may be thinking it will be impossible to flood all of these keywords throughout your content, and yes, you are probably right. Your webpage probably wouldn’t make much sense either. The most important keyword is the first one you put in the keyword list. For this page, the most important keyword is Pyramid Scheme, the others are just a added bonus.

Step 2 - Keyword in our description
On the 10th line you find the description. This description is found under the heading when people search the keyword “Pyramid Scheme” in the search engines. This brief paragraph describes what your webpage is about. It is your chance to catch the eye of your potential visitor’s to attract them to your website. You need to make this short, sweet and appealing to your reader. Most web searchers are looking for answers, so it is a good idea to try and predict the question the person is asking and briefly answer it, enticing them to read further.

Step 3 - Keyword in our heading on the webpage
This is self explanatory. In this example, our title is “Pyramid Scheme vs Network Marketing” , which clearly includes our keyword. Another advantage here is to write your heading in larger text - search engine seem to like this.

Step 4 - Keyword in the first 10 words of the first sentence
Like the title says, it is very important to enter your keyword in the first 10 words of the first sentence. This helps the search engine to identify the relevance of the webpage to what the person is searching for.

Step 5 – Insert your keyword throughout the webpage
As a rule of thumb, we have found that by placing your keyword every 100 to 150 words throughout your webpage, helps identify the relevance of the webpage to what the person is searching for.

Step 6 – Link with you keyword
Last of all you need to create a link in your content with your keyword and this link is to direct back to the same page. For example Pyramid Scheme. See how this link contains our keyword and if you click on it, it diverts to our Pyramid Scheme Page.

Let’s re-cap how we optimised our “Pyramid Scheme” webpage;

1. Keyword in the heading for the search engines
2. Keyword in our description for the search engines
3. Keyword in our heading on the webpage
4. Keyword in the first 10 words of the first paragraph
5. Keyword every 150 words throughout the page, and finally
6. A link back to the same page with the keyword

You do not really have to understand why the search engines like these 6 things, it is simply a formulae search engines use to ensure your content is relevant to what the searcher is looking for. But I can assure you, if you repeat these 6 steps you will become a SEO guru and most important of all, you will get plenty of web traffic for life. Once you have mastered these 6 steps it is equally important to make your content appealing to your reader.

Writing to Appeal to your Reader
There are usually two reasons people are searching on the internet; (1) is to find an answer to their questions and (2) is to buy something they need or want. In order to attract visitors to your website and retain them on you website, it comes down to your ability to write good content that appeals to the reader. If it does not appeal to the reader, the visitor will simply hit the back button and you will lose your potential customer. The trickiest part to being a good SEOer is to appeal both to the reader and the search engines. As you could imagine, it would be quite difficult to write an appealing webpage with a keyword “network marketing #1 home-based business”. Imagine trying to write this keyword throughout your webpage - it wouldn’t make much sense would it?

When you implement these 6 steps for all of your webpages and mastered your writing style, over time you will start seeing your website appear in the top 20 websites of the search engines. This brings us to next month’s topic: attracting people to your website from other people’s websites --using links. We will discuss how to start a link exchange program, entering your website into directories and other methods of increasing your search engine ranking.

Until next month

Happy Networking

Troy Rocavert
