What is a site concept?

The site concept is what your website is going to be about. For example; Network marketing Business School is based on network marketing or youtube is based on broadcasting you on TV. This is the main theme your website is going to be about. Choosing a site concept for your website is one of the most important decisions you are going to make. You are probably thinking, “well I sell soap or I sell vitamins, so I will make a website based on those products”. This is a common way of thinking when first starting out. Don’t you want a website that has hundreds of visitors every day? Then listen up because what you are about to read will save you countless hours of hard work and thousands of dollars. Throughout this month’s newsletter we are going to give you some ideas on how to go about this, as well as some site concepts to avoid.

Love what you choose

Firstly, one of most important factors when choosing a site concept is - will you love it? Please do not take this lightly. There is nothing worse than putting 500 hours into your website, only to find that you don’t like want you are doing.

You must remember building a website is a whole new business outside your network marketing business. It takes a lot of time and dedication to build a successful website. Can you remember a time in your network marketing business when you recruited 2 people into your business in one week? How good did this make you feel? Pretty good didn’t it? Now, can you remember another time when you had a prospect, with whom you invested about 3 months of your time, who you solely concentrated on because you knew they were going to be the next diamond director? And as you were just about to sign them up, they said that your business opportunity was really not for them. How did this make you feel? Not so good.

Building a website is much like your network marketing business, where you will experience some very tough times that will nearly drive you to quit. This is why you need a site concept that you really love and enjoy to keep you motivated even on the most challenging days.

Most successful people in the world become successful because they really love what they do. Take Donald Trump for example - property investor, over 60 years of age and still working, not because he needs to, but because he loves to. Can you see the difference?

No one cares about your shoes

It is so important when choosing a site concept for you to put yourself into the web searchers shoes, so to speak. Last month we talked about the importance of solving peoples problems when you are writing your content. The book How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, sums up the way to deliver your content“If sales people can show us how their services or merchandise will help us solve our problems, they will not need to sell us. We’ll buy. And customers like to feel that they are buying –not being sold”.

Consider the competition

The internet is becoming a very competitive medium and therefore if you don’t choose a smart site concept from the start it can lead to a lot of frustration. Unless you have 60 hours per week to dedicate to your website and your skin is as thick as a crocodile’s we suggest that you do your homework and choose wisely.

Let’s look at some practical examples.

Let’s say your company sell’s vitamins and you decide to design your website with the site concept of vitamins or supplements. It sounds good in theory, but a reality check helps you to realise that there are literally hundreds of mainstream companies with big budgets to spend who are also competing for this same site concept. Being realistic, unless you are an internet guru who do you think is going to end up on top?

The key is to narrow down your site concept, leave the broad terms like ‘vitamins’ or ‘health’ to the big players. You see whilst these search terms do receive a lot of traffic they are non-specific and therefore the chance of converting these visitors into profit is going to be difficult.

Instead if you were to narrow down your site concept and choose a niche market for example ‘supplements for tri-athletes’ you have now significantly narrowed down your competition and because these visitor are specifically looking for supplements to assist their performance, you know they are looking to spend money. Whilst potentially you will not receive as many visitors to your website, those that do arrive (assuming you do a good job) will have their visa cards ready.

‘Work from home’ or ‘network marketing’ are also very competitive site concepts, so if you intend to try and generate leads for your business using a website we suggest you narrow these terms down. Pick a specific market and tailor your website to that market.

Remember last month I said that if you are not on the first two pages of the search engines then your chances of being found are very low. This means there is only room for about 20 different websites. Therefore you need to be able design a website that will make at least the top 20, better still the top 5. If you want to take on the big players and go broad with your site concept, by all means give it a go, just be prepared to spend a lot more time. If you do make it, it will be extremely rewarding.

Try putting the Prospects shoes on

If your network marketing business sells skin care, then you may want to think of a website that is related to some kind of skin derma. Why would you want to start a website on a type of skin derma? Because these are the types of things people search for. Skin care is a solution, it’s not a problem. If you tailor your website towards the visitor’s problem, you should have no trouble offering them your solution (skin care products).

Where to start?

You have two options when it comes to choosing a site concept for your network marketing business, (1) Promoting your Business Opportunity or (2) Your Product. Once you have made the first decision, the next step is to write down a list of potentially good site concepts. Make a list as long as you can. Remember; put yourself in the searchers shoes.

Regardless of which way you decide to go, the goal is to find a niche market within that industry to narrow down your competition and increase your potential sales conversions. Whilst narrowing down your site concept is important you need to ensure you still have a market. So don’t narrow it down too much, this will be discussed in more detail next month.

Remember last month we talked about your content -- continuing on from that, we need to be able to choose a site concept that you have the potential to write lots of content about, the more pages you can right the better.

Once you have got a list of concepts, you have to pick the three best. Like anything, you need one to compare with the other so you can determine which will be the best concept for your website. This brings us to next month’s newsletter on how to research profitable site concepts. We will look into some great free tools that are available and explain how to use them and why.
