The USA has been hit hard by the Global Financial Crisis so how has this impacted Network Marketing in USA?

The United States of America (USA) was the ‘foundation’ country for the Network Marketing/MLM industry which dates back to the 1940’s. Today it operates in all 50 states of the United States and in 2007 it was estimated that:

  • The value of the Direct Selling Industry (incorporating Network Marketing/MLM) is worth USD $30.8 Billion. This represents a massive 27% share of the total value (USD $114 Billion) of the direct selling industry worldwide1.
  • Over 15 million sales people in the United States operate a direct selling or network marketing /mlm business. This represents almost 24% of the total Global Sales force of 62.7 million2.

Most interestingly the Direct Selling Industry has outgrown Retail Sales over the past 10 years quite considerably. Direct Sales has grown by 3.4% (1998-2007) in comparison to a downturn of 8% in the Retail industry2. In Particular The Wellness Industry has experienced the biggest growth by product sector over the ten year period from 1998 to 2007; with 6% growth.

Direct Selling and Network Marketing in America has proven to be a viable part-time business. Of those working in the industry 76% spend between 1 and 19 hours on their business. The ability to turn a part-time income into something greater is represented by the 12% who have turned their Direct Selling businesses into a more full-time profession.

The National United States Sales Force Survey in 2008 demonstrated a dominant female share representing 87.1% of the total Direct Selling sales force. However, the Global Financial Crises and increasing insecurity in the job market has led to a rapid increase in interest in Direct Sales and the Home-based business industry amongst males in the United States.

Our Predictions for Network Marketing in USA

The impacts of the current Global Financial Crisis (GFC) have been felt throughout most economies, but none greater than that of the United States. An alarming half-million (533,000) American jobs vanished in November 2007 alone; the worst mass layoffs in 34 years, as economic carnage spread ever faster and the nation hurtled toward what could be the hardest hard times since the Great Depression.

Since the start of the recession in December 2008, the economy has shed 1.9 million jobs in 6 months, and the number of unemployed people has increased by 2.7 million — to 10.3 million now out of work. Some analysts predict 3 million more jobs will be lost between May 2009 and the spring of 20104.

While this is terrible news for many people, it also represents a unique opportunity to secure financial security for those looking to join and those already part of the Network Marketing in the USA. Many people are questioning the need to consider a Financial Plan B; as the Plan A of a J.O.B seems more insecure than ever.
