How To Find The Best Work At Home Opportunity In Canada

- By Preeti Malhans

If you have been recently looking for a work at home opportunity in Canada, you have most likely noticed that the majority of the companies are based outside of Canada (typically in the United States). However, several of these work at home businesses allow for Canadian residents to participate in becoming distributors of the products and services the company offers and allows Canadians to set up their own work at home businesses.

By doing your homework in determining what types of work at home opportunities are available, you've likely discovered that there is what seems to be an endless array of products and services that you can offer from the comfort of your home, and build a legitimate business.

The question that I often asked myself when I started on my search to start my own home based business is-what is the best work at home opportunity for those in Canada?

As a young Canadian who was looking to find the perfect fit when it came to starting my own work at home business, I went on an intensive search that took 14 months (yes 14 months!!! I'm a Virgo and a bit of a perfectionist). Along the way, I examined several areas of different work at home businesses to determine the best for me.

Here are my top 3 things to look for in a work at home business in Canada:

  1. This one may seem logical, but often it gets ignored--find a work at home business that offers a product or service that you will be truly proud to promote. Makes sense right? For me personally, I wanted to align myself with a product that I would actually use in my daily life and if my family and friends asked me about I, I would be comfortable sharing this information with them, not shy away or be embarrassed.

  2. When selecting a work at home opportunity, make sure you know what types of payment options the company offers. For example, this could be cheques that are mailed out from the US company office out to your Canadian address (the time it takes for that cheque to travel in the mail to finally reach your mailbox can sometimes be up to 2 weeks). Or they may offer other options such as payment though online transactions such as Paypal or prepaid credit cards. The company that I work with, allows me to receive my income with a prepaid credit card (which are accepted in Canada as I use them all the time). The great thing about this is that I receive my commission on the same day the company wires the income into my prepaid credit card. This saves me the time and hassle from having to wait for the cheque to arrive in my mailbox, and then having to go to the bank, make the deposit

  3. Research how the work at home opportunity operates in the sense of certain policies and procedures that affects Canadian distributors. For example, with the greeting card company that I work with, because of Canadian government laws, we are not allowed to have a physical presence promoting our work at home opportunity.

This means no trade shows, flyers, storefronts, retail kiosks are not allowed as being a representative of the company, there are certain ethical codes and conducts we must follow. However, with my company, if you are a Canadian resident and decide to travel to the U.S. and want to participate in a tradeshow, that is acceptable. Make sure that you are aware exactly of the limitations that you face when it comes to operating the business as a Canadian distributor.

These are just a few guidelines that helped me when it came to starting my work at home business in Canada. Of course, not every business opportunity will be right for you but make sure you take the time to truly examine all areas of the company and its products before you take the leap and sign up. Definitely stay away from companies that claim that you’ll make a fortune in a matter or days or weeks. Having your home-based business is hard work but the rewards are also substantial.

As a Canadian joining a U.S. based company, I recommend that everyone take the time to learn how you will be affected if you join a business that operates in a different country
